My Niece

My brother is a city slicker and a California surfer. At least he WAS until he married a gal who grew up on a ranch and was accustomed to owning and caring for horses.

His wife endured the city slicker life for many years, and then things changed. My brother's job transferred to Colorado. My sister-in-law patiently stuck things out in the suburbs for awhile but then...one day...while taking a drive they happened upon a small cozy home with several acres of land. This cute cottage is now "home sweet home" and has grown into a ranch where his wife and two daughters enjoy owning horses. Here are a few snap shots of my 14-year-old niece (sent via email) at the recent National Western Stock Show.

A few years ago, I visited the ranch. I was able to ride a horse, but they put it on a lead, because he was a little spunky...like all their horses. They don't have the kind that walk real slow. I decided to make him trot and I almost fell off. As you can tell, I don't know how to ride. I do better on 2 wheels. So...have you ever been on a horse?

I live in Colorado. Not on a ranch but we are almost in the county. :) I have to be close to a store. I'm just a city girl.

But I love horses and rode a lot as a child. Not so much these days. Trotting is hard on the behind. Galloping is best. Very exhilarating.

Great shots of your niece. We didn't get to the stock show this year - too cold.

What fun. She looks so elegant on that horse :)

My son, Jared took riding lessons for about 2 years but mostly what they offer on the east coast is English riding which means jumping and shows. Once he got to that point he bailed. All he wanted to do was ride but I do have some video of him riding and jumping a few hurdles. Of course Joel was 1 year old and running in all the wrong directions...

I used to ride with my first husband when we were dating. Their family owned a horse, a retired police horse if I'm not mistaken. Of course they rode western or bareback (I had to use a saddle). I think maybe that was what spurred Jared to want to ride. It connected him to his dad who he never got to know. (Gerry died when Jared was 9 months old.)

Anyhow, I've gone on long enough. Oh yeah, Jim and I rode along the Maui coast (on a grassy section near the rocky shore in Hana)on our honeymoon. It was beautiful!

Thanks for bringing me down memory lane.
